How to Prepare for Your Pool Leak Detection | Carlito’s Way Pool Leak Detection Miami

Booking a professional pool leak detection is the first step — but getting your pool ready is just as important.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help homeowners prepare so we can locate every possible leak efficiently and accurately.

1️⃣ Make Sure the Water Level Is at the Middle of the Tile Line

Before your appointment, the pool water must be at the middle of the tile line.
That’s how we can properly test the entire pool structure, especially when performing dye testing around the grout, skimmer(s), and steps.

I once had a homeowner in Pembroke Pines who was losing water quickly due to an aggressive main drain leak.
Her pool was nearly 70% empty when I arrived. I performed the test as best I could, but some areas couldn’t be checked because the water was too low.
The leak ended up being around the main drain mud sump, which I sealed using a 5-minute hardener and epoxy.
With my 90-day warranty, she was able to refill the pool, monitor it, and — thankfully — never had to call me back.

Pro tip: Keep your water at the middle of the tile line before and after your test to make sure I can inspect every inch of your pool.

2️⃣ Ensure the Pool Is Swimmable and Clear

I completely understand — a leaking pool often means unstable chemistry and algae blooms.
But visibility is everything during a leak test. A pool with light algae is fine, but a completely green pool cannot be properly tested.

One client in Coconut Grove decided to “help” before his test by pouring in 7.5 gallons of liquid chlorine the morning of the appointment 😅.
Let’s just say I’d rather have a pool with a little algae than one that’s too freshly shocked to swim in!

Keep the pool clear enough to see the main drain and steps.

3️⃣ Let Me Know About Any Dogs or Pets

I love animals — but they don’t always love strangers in their yard with loud equipment!
If you have dogs, please let me know ahead of time.

A homeowner in Doral once told me, “Don’t worry, they stay inside.”
Unfortunately, her son didn’t get the memo and accidentally let two German Shepherds outside mid-test —
good thing leak detection requires jumping in the pool! 🐕💦

Tip: Please secure your pets before the visit.

4️⃣ Coordinate with Your Pool Service

If your pool service is scheduled the same day as your leak detection, it’s best to give them a heads-up.
Pool service techs often have tight schedules, and it’s hard to clean while I’m inside the pool performing tests.
A quick text or call lets them adjust their route without delay.

Coordinate service days to make everyone’s job easier.

5️⃣ Confirm Payment Method Before the Appointment

Every homeowner has their own creative payment system —
from Zelle and Venmo, to checks in Ziploc bags or cash in the pool timer box.

One of my favorite moments was a client in Davie who hid cash inside a magazine and texted me the page number like a mini scavenger hunt! 😂

To make things easy, please let me know your preferred payment method before the appointment.

Final Reminder

Preparing your pool helps me provide the most accurate leak detection possible.
If you’re not sure whether your pool is ready, just text me a photo of your pool, pool equipment, and your zip code —
I’ll confirm what’s needed before arrival.
